Huge torque comes from the FZ-09's powerful 847cc in-line 3-cylinder engine, which is built around the crossplane crankshaft concept. It's paired with a lightweight chassis and a slim design for incredible handling.

• Powerful Inline-Triple

The engine is an 847cc, liquid-cooled, in-line 3-cylinder DOHC unit with 12 valves and fuel injection. In the FZ-09™, advanced high-tech components such as YCC-T® and Yamaha D-Mode work together with a crossplane concept crankshaft. The result is an engine character that's exciting, full of torque and quick to rev.

• Crossplane Concept

With the “Crossplane Crankshaft Concept,” torque builds in a linear way as the rider works the throttle. The in-line 3-cylinder engine in the FZ-09 delivers that linear torque buildup along with evenly spaced firing intervals, so torque comes on smoothly and there's a satisfying sense of power through the low to middle rpm range. The CP3® engine is light, slim and compact as well, and its performance blends the best traits of 2-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines alike.

• Advanced YCC-T

The ride-by-wire Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) system detects even the smallest throttle movement from the rider and passes that data to the ECU. The ECU instantly works out the ideal throttle valve opening from engine rpm and throttle opening. It then signals a servo-motor actuator to move the throttle valve, which actively regulates how much air flows into the intake. This technology plays a part in the sense of torque and control the rider gets from the 3-cylinder engine.

• Selectable D-MODE

The FZ-09 comes fitted with Yamaha’s D-MODE (“Drive Mode”) variable throttle control system, which lets the rider pick the optimum engine character for the riding situation at hand. At the push of a button, the rider can select among three throttle valve control maps (Standard Mode, “A” Mode, and “B” Mode), each with its own performance characteristics. STD Mode is tuned to suit a broad range of riding conditions, giving a linear feel of torque from low speeds right through to high speeds. A-Mode gives the rider sharper throttle response than STD Mode in the low- to mid-rpm range, while B-Mode allows the rider to enjoy a milder throttle response.
